The Delight and Pain of Being Odysseus
Odysseus should not approach the island of the sirens, whose song, it was said, was so marvelous that it could completely dominate a male's senses, leading him to sensual ecstasy and the abandonment of all the masks imposed by his 'Self'. However, after so many years craving for Penelope's love, and on the verge of exploding carnal needs, he could not refrain himself, opting to go and meet them. Cunningly, he ordered his rowers to completely block their ears, but not his own. He also ordered them to tie him very tightly to the ship's mast, so as to make it impossible for him, a muscular, stalwart hero of the Trojan War, to untie alone.
They sailed, thence, to meet the sirens, whose song excited and bewitched Odysseus entirely, leading him to the climax of climaxes of pleasure.
In such a bewitched state, he begged rowers to set his body free, but in vain.
Any human being who once lived a deep encounter with another one's desires, body, and soul— intense enough to suspending time, and touching Eternity— is able to glimpse the delight and pain of Odysseus upon hearing that forbidden song.
What pain?
The pain that comes with the imposition of returning to the commonplace perception of time, forcing us to retreat back to behind our social masks
