Apollo and Daphne: a sculpture by Lorenzo Bernini at Galeria Borghese, Rome, Italy
A Poem dedicated to Elisa de Sanctis*, my dream, my fancy.
Life makes only sense,
When we seek the impossible.
Despite this, day after day,
Human desires keep flowing,
No matter how repetitive
Or without meaning.
Pauline, you're my impossible,
Most wished, unreachable girl,
Despite this, night after night,
My body keep shuddering
Even if by a so repeating
Flow of small, empty pleasures.
.............
*Elisa is a character in the movie "The Great Beauty", 2013, Italian masterpiece by P. Sorrentino, winner of the best 2013 foreign film Oscar. I daresay it's easy for you, reader, to solve the riddle on why have I chosen to dedicate this poem to her, i.e., to Jep Gambardella's (main character) impossible love . For the same reason, I bet you'll quickly infer I put myself in his shoes, don't you?
However, if you haven't yet seen this Roman masterpiece, well, just do it! I am sure you will love it. On the other hand, if you have already watched La Grande Bellezza, I am sure you can recognize Elisa de Sanctis as inspired by the Beatrice di Dante Alighieri.
