"What we need today are universal values based not on faith but on scientific findings, common experience and common sense."

That seems to be a very dangerous uttering by His Holiness! Perhaps there's some translation mistake involved here. Anyway, let's build an ethical thought experiment and try an exclusively rational scientific way to solve a contemporary big woe:
Taking into account that this planet is being rampantly destroyed to feed but also to satisfy senseless consumerist needs of 7.5 billion people, it's easy to see that a major goal (oh yes, a major pragmatic achievement), for planet leaders would be to find an efficient way to ensure all conditions aiming to the preservation of our own biological species till the 22nd century, and further in time, isn't it?
If a solution cannot be found in some years ahead, the speed of destruction remaining the same, any action will come too late, causing Homo sapiens to go extinct in some decades ahead.
Why not to diminish drastically from 7.5 billion, say, to 3 billion the number of human individuals on Earth? Or perhaps to even less than 3.000.000.000!Be sure it would be so easy for top scientists to find a painless quick way to do this 'job'. Only one unsurpassable hindering would they have to face: ETHICAL HUMAN VALUES, actually essencially exterior to any empirical sciences, or to any kind of common sense or of common experience (a still more dangerous advisers than empirical theories!).
